Our Story

The ELA Honor Society is a vibrant community of students and teachers, from all walks of life, united in their passion for the English Language Arts, and determined to do well.

Through our programs, activities, grants, and awards, we encourage student excellence and nurture potential. We also aim for breadth. Our programs will quickly expand into fields related to the English Language Arts such as student journalism, communications, media production, and other forms of creative production.

We hope the ELA Honor Society will provide a home to any middle school student or teacher interested in the English Language Arts and an experience that will foster creativity, engagement, and academic prowess.

We Strive for Excellence and Inclusion

Excellence:

The ELA Honor Society is an organization for all middle school students and teachers with a passion for, and commitment to, the English Language Arts. Our student members and Chapter Advisors represent a broad cross-section of high achievers, admitted on merit, who are inspired and empowered to reach their full potential.

We abide by Sigma Tau Delta’s vision for “transforming the world with words.”

Inclusion:

The ELA Honor Society believes that the free expression of diverse experiences can powerfully, and positively, transform our world. By engaging with inclusive literature and elevating the voices of marginalized writers through our annual Big Read, guest speakers, and student challenges we support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices in our classrooms and our communities.

The ELA Honor Society encourages student members and Chapter Advisors to challenge social constructs around age, citizenship status, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, geography, national origin, physical traits, race, religion, sexual orientation, skin color, and socioeconomic status by ensuring that the literature we read and the projects we support reflect the diversity of our global community.

We acknowledge our advances while recognizing the need to engage in further work to expand our efforts to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging among our student members, Chapter Advisors, Advisory Council, and Central Office staff, ensuring that all ELA Honor Society members are supported, empowered, celebrated, and able to embrace their authentic selves in all aspects of ELA Honor Society Chapter life.

Our Story

The ELA Honor Society is a program created by Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society for four-year universities and colleges, which has been operating since 1924 and is the second largest discipline-specific honor society in the world, and the National English Honor Society for High Schools, which works with over 80,000 high school students worldwide.

Our family of prestigious honor societies has become a mainstay at both the high school and collegiate level, equipping the ELA Honor Society with the proven principles and strategies to promote literacy, provide unique academic opportunities, elevate achievement, and celebrate ELA excellence in middle schools.
