The ELA Big Read 2025-2026

The ELA Honor Society has announced its 2025–2026 Big Read selection: Internment by Samira Ahmed. This compelling young adult novel invites middle school readers to explore themes of civil rights, resistance, and identity through the story of Layla Amin, a 17-year-old Muslim American girl who, along with her parents, is forcibly placed in an internment camp. Layla’s journey of courage and defiance against systemic oppression serves as a powerful catalyst for discussions on justice and activism.

Selected for its timely relevance, Internment delves into the consequences of silence and the power of collective action. Chapter Advisors praised the book for its political and social pertinence, noting its focus on contemporary issues and its presentation of a non-white perspective on how the US treats “outsiders” and the history of censorship. Author Samira Ahmed emphasizes the protagonist’s transformation from an ordinary teenager to a symbol of resistance, highlighting the resilience and agency of young individuals in the face of adversity.

Copies of Internment can be purchased from Bookshop.org.
